IRS Sec 1-04 Group Bravo JustificationRESEARCH JUSTIFICATIONYEAR ONE Class S1-04 Group Bravo INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH STUDIESResearch Topic: Botany, Environmental Science, Medicine and Health, Space ScienceChosen Area of Focus: An investigation of the UV Distribution Patterns in SST and a Development of an Innovative solution1. Framing our research topicOur chosen area of focus is “An investigation of the UV Distribution Patterns in SST and a Development of an Innovative solution”. We have chosen this topic as we want to find a way to reduce the amount of UV Rays at the area which receives the most amount of UV Rays using Sunscreens.

a. A possible reason for problems related to high amounts of UV Rays are that global warming is worsening and the whole world is become warmer and warmer. Another possible reason is that Singapore lies in the equator, therefore receiving more sunlight and UV Rays.

b. The advantages are that students will be less affected by UV Rays and get to enjoy a cool environment instead of a warm climate outside.

The advantages are that students will be less affected by UV Rays and get to enjoy a cool environment instead of a warm climate outside. c. A possible solution is to have a piece of glass will be coated with the particular (may be modified) sunscreen to reduce the UV Rays at that area which receives the most amount of UV Rays without reducing too much of light present there.

2. Reasons for choice of topic a. We have chosen this topic, as we want to find out about the area in SST which receives the greatest amount of UV Rays and try to reduce the amount of UV Rays there. b. This allows us to fulfill the requirements of the project task as the project task looks at studying the amount of UV Rays around places in SST and make an attempt to reduce the amount of UV Rays that area receives. c. This topic benefits society as people will be able to be safe from getting too much UV Rays there and improving the conditions around that area.

3. Feasibility of the research a. There is a need for our research, as many people may be affected by too much UV Rays at that area when they are conducting activities at that area. b. It is possible to carry out and complete the project, as there are many sunscreens to choose from to coat the glass and reduce the UV Rays in that area. c. The proposed course of action is logical and realistic as it can be completed with the help of finding out the effects on how different chemicals in sunscreens can help reduce the amount of UV Rays. d. The research provides sufficient opportunity for generation of ideas, as we will constantly have to think of ways to do certain things in the project for example, how to mix chemicals in sunscreens to make a sunscreen to be coated on glass. As for analysis and evaluation of ideas, we will certainly have many opportunities to analyse information and evaluate ideas on how to go about deciding what to do next.

4. Manageability of the research a. The timeline for the different components of the project will be decided later based on the situation then. But overall, the project will be done as quickly and carefully as we can, trying our best not to go out of point and staying as close to the topic as possible. b. This research provides sufficient opportunity for group work as we will need to discuss a lot of matters regarding the project for example, the research and discussion of how the sunscreens should be modified. c. We do anticipate some difficulties along the way, such as the fact that the UV Rays around the school campus may be nearly the same or the sunscreens do not work out as good as what we expected. We intend to cope with these difficulties by trying to get the area which needs the UV Rays shelter most and to get the best possible sunscreen based on different conditions if we encounter those problems.

5. Accessibility of the information required a. Information/knowledge that will be relevant to our research would be the chemicals in the sunscreens and what they do and how they reduce the amount of UV Rays received. b. We will be obtaining this information from primary and secondary sources, depending on which one gives more reliable and useful information. c. Some alternatives that we have thought of would be to ask others for information or where can we find the information that we need. d. Some problems we anticipate while gathering my materials would be that the chemicals in the sunscreens are nearly the same and that those sunscreens are the only ones we can find and get.
